Information on admission requirements (courses, testing, grades) for prospective freshmen and transfers, financial aid, on-line application forms, links to websites at each campus (UC Berkeley, UCLA, Davis, Santa Cruz, Riverside, Irvine, Santa Barbara, San Diego). You can e-mail admissions-related questions to UC staff, too. A very useful site for students in middle school, high school or community college, and for parents.

For information on transferring to the University of California as a junior from a community college or a four-year college, check the detailed Answers for Transfers site.

Early Academic Outreach Program of the University of California.

Virtually all private and public four-year and community colleges in the San Francisco Bay Area are linked here, along with a few other Northern California colleges like University of the Pacific. Handy starting point.

Colleges from Argentina to Zambia.
Yahoo!'s comprehensive links to practically every 4-year college and university, public and private, throughout the U.S. and around the world.

TESTING

Subject A requirements and data. Be sure to look at the sample essays and exam if you have been admitted to the Univesity of California and need to take the Subject A exam.

Another Subject A exam page page from the University of California. Lots of information, including many sample questions and graded essays.

Educational Testing Service.

You'll find sample test questions, plus information and links on general college application topics and financial aid.

ACT Home Page.
Although the SATs are the most widely used college entrance tests in California, some colleges require the ACT and others will accept it as an alternative to the SAT I. Here are details, date and on-line registration.

FINANCIAL AID

College can be expensive! Don't assume your family has too much income to qualify for financial aid; at the least, check out one of the many on-line financial aid calculators that estimate (roughly) what you might qualify for. And don't assume you have too little money for college, even a private college far from home; investigate the many sources of financial help before you decide.

One thing you can be sure of - if you apply for financial aid, you'll be filling out a lot of forms. File your income tax returns early (as soon aftter Jan. 1 as you can manage), keep track of deadlines, and always have an extra blank copy of application forms in case you mess up.

What's FAFSA? What's CSS? What are the different types of college loans? The annual college guides from TIME magazine and from U.S. News & World Report (available at most newstands) usually include a decent introduction to the special vocabulary, abbreviations and concepts of financial aid. Then check out the web sites listed below for more information.

Caution: When you're finding forms and deadlines on-line, make sure they are for the RIGHT YEAR. Older versions tend to hang around on the Internet.

$&Sense@UC.
Financial aid information for the University of California.

California Student Aid Commission.
Information on the FAFSA (the application for most types of financial aid) and Cal Grants. You can download a FAFSA ap, look up college codes, check out California's own special programs, and link to other governnmental financial aid websites.

FinAid: The Financial Aid Information Page.
An excellent, comprehensive site, sponsored by the National Assn. of Student Financial Aid Administrators. Don't leave FinAid till the last minute - there's so much here that you may be overwhelmed at first. It's definitely worth taking the time to explore (check out the section on avoiding scholarship scams and the links for all kinds of special needs). Highly recommended.

College Board financial aid section.
In the financial aid area of this site, you can register on-line for the CSS Profile, the secondary financial aid application required by many private colleges.
