10-Year-Old Jessica Fisher Wins $1,000 College Scholarship in What was Supposed to be the BATTLESHIP ``Sink the Yukon'' Tournament

HMCS Yukon Sinks Prematurely Off San Diego Coast ... But the Show Still Went On

SAN DIEGO--(BUSINESS WIRE FEATURES)--July 14, 2000-- Jessica Fisher, a 10-year-old from Vista, Calif. is now the envy of every kid across the country -- today, she was crowned the Ultimate BATTLESHIP Champion and won a $1,000 college scholarship and a toy chest full of board games from Milton Bradley, a division of Hasbro Games.

Fisher and 63 other strategy-savvy kids competed over six rounds of the BATTLESHIP game on Friday, July 14 at Seaport Village in San Diego. Fisher and 10-year-old Bill Marr of Escondido, Calif. emerged as the two finalists by day's end.

Fisher and Marr took their positions in Round Six of the tournament at approximately 3:15 p.m. and put their best strategic skills to the test while they engaged in what would become the most intense game of BATTLESHIP known to man. It was a close game, but Fisher was the victor.

The winner of the BATTLESHIP "Sink the Yukon" contest was initially going to push the button that would sink the HMCS Yukon, a decommissioned 366-foot Canadian destroyer. However, the Yukon prematurely sank all on its own early Friday morning. Determined that the game should go on, and not to disappoint the participating children, Hasbro Games decided to offer the winner of the tournament a $1,000 college scholarship and 37 board games, one for each year the Yukon was in commission.

The HMCS Yukon will be an all-purpose artificial reef, which will serve as a haven for marine life, a star attraction for scuba divers, and a research source for oceanographers.

Hasbro Games manufactures and markets games and puzzles under the brand names Milton Bradley, Parker Brothers and Avalon Hill.
