Gatorade Names California's Monique Henderson the Nation's Best High School Girls' Track and Field Athlete

SAN DIEGO, Calif., Aug. 10 , 2000/PRNewswire/ -- Celebrating its 15th anniversary of honoring the nation's best high school athletes, Gatorade(R) Thirst Quencher, in partnership with Scholastic Coach & Athletic Director magazine, today announced junior Monique Henderson of Samuel F.B. Morse High School as the Gatorade(R) National High School Girls' Track and Field Athlete of the Year.

The award, which also factors in academic achievements and overall character, distinguishes Henderson as the best high school track and field student-athlete in the nation. In the history of the program, she is only the second underclassman to capture the Gatorade National High School Girls' Track and Field Athlete of the Year Award, the first being U.S. Olympian Marion Jones.

Henderson made a major impact this year on the national scene in women's track and field. At the California State Championships, her 50:74:00 in the 400m was the fastest high school time of the year, the third fastest American time and the sixth fastest in the world. It marked her third consecutive state 400m title. She also won the 200m with a time of 23:19:00.

Henderson excels off the track as well, as evidenced by her 3.9 GPA. She will sit on the Committee of Athletics at Morse High in her senior year and is a member of the National Honor Society.

"Monique is incredibly focused and hard working which are the reasons for her success," explains coach Gary MacDonald. "She's articulate, bright, unassuming and extremely caring. Her leadership qualities have earned the respect of her teammates as their captain."

The selection was made by the Gatorade National Advisory Board, comprised of 10 national and regional sports journalists, who collected nominations from all over the country. Henderson was selected from more than 395,000 high school girls' track and field athletes nationwide.

The Gatorade High School Player of the Year program recognizes athletes in 50 states and the District of Columbia, and awards one National Player of the Year in football, volleyball, baseball, softball, and boys' and girls' basketball, soccer, and track & field.
