Gatorade Recognizes Texas Track Sensation With Nation's Most Prestigious High School Award
Only a junior, Yclindria stands in a class by herself as a three-time winner of Gatorade Girls' Track honors in Texas. At the Texas State Track Meet, Ychlindria took home championships in four different events including the 100m dash (11.88), 200m dash (24.01), long jump and triple jump. She also broke the nine-year-old state record in the triple jump (44' 2 1/4") and set the state-meet record in the long jump (21'3 1/4") and triple jump. However, Ychlindria's achievements on the track tell only half the story. An honor student, she is ranked in the top 5% of her class and maintains a 3.83 GPA. Ychlindria serves as a student council representative and is a member of the National Honor Society. When she's not blowing away the competition with her lightening speed, Ychlindria stays involved in Luling by volunteering at fundraisers and community dinners. Luling Track Coach Mike Barnett attributes much of Ychlindria's success to relentless determination. He believes Ychlindria understands what it takes to be at the top and puts in the hours to get there. "Her desire to win can only be matched by her modesty and willingness to help others. Ychlindria will be successful no matter if she runs or jumps ever again." The 2001 Gatorade National High School Girls' Track & Field Athlete of the Year selection was made by the Gatorade National Advisory Board, comprised of ten national and regional sports journalists who collected nominations from across the country. Ychlindria was selected from more than 407,000 girls' track athletes nationwide. "We believe success in high school athletics is predicated on more than just skill," says Gatorade Vice President of Sports Marketing, Tom Fox. "While Gatorade athletes are the best in their sports, being a winner also mean having character, being a leader and caring as much about your test scores as your game scores. Ychlindria Spears is a shining example of the role sports can play in a teenager's life." This is the second straight year that the girls' track winner has been an underclassman and only the fourth time the winner has not been from California. Ychlindria follows an elite list of past winners, including Marion Jones, who was awarded Gatorade National Girls' Track honors three times throughout her high school career. Marion remains the only three-time winner of any Gatorade National Athlete of the Year honor.
