Four Scholar-Athletes Win 2001 K-SWISS Staying in the Game Scholarships Each winner will receive a $4,000 scholarship from K-SWISS. Runners-up Julie Bert of LaGrange, Illinois and James E. Guthrie of Scottsboro, Alabama will each receive $2,000 scholarships. The program was administered by Scholastic Coach & Athletic Director Magazine. The objective of the scholarship is to reward four high school seniors for their exemplary performance in the classroom, in athletics, and in serving their community. This is the fourth year that K-SWISS has offered the Nielson, who ranked second in her graduating class at Boise High, compiled a perfect 4.0 grade point average and an equally perfect 1,600 on the Scholastic Achievement Test (SAT), while starring in soccer and track & field. She captained Boise's 2000 state high school champion soccer team and was voted first-team All-Conference and team MVP, an honor she also won as a junior. Her club soccer team, Les Bois United, won a pair of state championships (1999 and 2000). In the classroom, Nielson excelled in math and science, winning Idaho's Top Scholar Award in 2000. In addition to membership in the National Honor Society, she is a published poet, and a four-year member of Boise's Chamber and Symphonic Orchestras. "She's just a great person," said Boise athletic director Tracy Leinen. "On the field or off, she's simply outstanding." This fall, she'll attend Harvard University. Skinner, valedictorian of Clinton High, also posted a perfect 4.0 GPA. He starred in four sports, earning All-State honors in football and was the #1 ranked quarterback in Class 4-A for Clinton's 2000 state champions. He also finished in the top 10 in the Oklahoma State high school golf championships and was named to three all-tournament teams in baseball. In addition, he was voted Player of the Week in basketball numerous times. A four-year member of the National and State Honor Societies, Skinner was a member of Clinton's vocal music ensembles and active with the Fellowship of Christian Athletes. According to Clinton Athletic Director and Coach Mike Lee, Rodney is one of a kind. "I've been in this business for 19 years," he said. "Rodney is the best student-athlete I've ever been around. He's great at everything he does. Beyond that, he is an even better person." This fall he will enter the University of Oklahoma. Female runner-up Julie Bert also holds a perfect 4.0 GPA. She finished second in her class of 705 at highly competitive Lyons Township High. Julie participated in three sports -- diving, gymnastics, and soccer. An all-stater in diving (she finished 11th in the state) and all-conference in gymnastics (she came in 28th in the state), she was also a four-year defensive star in soccer. Off the field, Bert was a member of the school's Scholastic Bowl and Energy Teams and was selected to the National Honor Society and Senior Leadership Council. Bert also studied abroad in both Mexico and Spain. Additionally she served as a volunteer referee for AYSO soccer games, working with a church youth group, and volunteering at a home for the mentally disabled. Athletic director Mike Morris says, "She's a rare kid. Her three sports are so diverse, it's amazing. And she's just a wonderful young woman." Guthrie was fourth in his class at Scottsboro High School, with a 4.0 GPA. In addition to starring in basketball, he was a four-year all-stater in both track & field and cross-country. Guthrie will attend Vanderbilt in the fail. Scottsboro High School track & field and cross-country Coach John Esslinger remarked, "James is the type of student who is both a challenge and a pleasure to teach and coach. His drive, determination, intelligence, and creative abilities cause good teachers to teach better and good coaches to do their best, knowing that James is so gifted. He has given his all to his team and school, and makes us proud to have been part of his life." These winners were chosen from close to 2,000 applications nationwide.
