DWP of Los Angeles Science Bowl - Nation's Most Successful Regional Tournament in Prestigious Program - Set for Saturday, Feb. 17

LOS ANGELES--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Feb. 9, 2001

North Hollywood High School To Defend Three Consecutive First Place Regional, Second and Fourth Place National Titles; Bill Nye the Science Guy to Serve as Moderator for Finals

The DWP (Dept. of Water & Power) Science Bowl, the nation's most successful regional competition, is set for Saturday, Feb. 17 from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. at the utility's downtown headquarters, John Ferraro Building, 111 N. Hope St. The public is invited.

In the past six years, winning high school teams at the DWP Science Bowl have gone on to capture three national titles, two second place trophies and a fourth place finish. This success is unsurpassed by any other regional competition in the prestigious U.S. Department of Energy National Science Bowl program.

Eight-time Emmy Award-winning television host Bill Nye the Science Guy will serve as moderator for the final rounds of competition expected to begin about 4 p.m. He will also help present awards to winning teams.

This year 42 teams from 29 local high schools will participate at the DWP Science Bowl. Throughout the nation, about 9,000 students in 61 regional competitions representing about 1800 high schools will participate in the National Science Bowl program.

While North Hollywood High School won the competition the last three years, DWP officials indicated that several schools including those that previously won national titles are expected to also have strong teams including Van Nuys High School (1995) Venice High School (1996 and 1997), and Academic Decathlon powerhouse El Camino Real High School.

The preliminary round robin or league play will begin in the morning. The top finishers in each of six leagues will advance to the double elimination tournament in the afternoon. In addition, a hands-on side competition will also be held in the afternoon in front of the building as part of the program.

Prizes include the all-expense paid trip to Washington, D.C., funded by the U.S. Department of Energy, to represent the regional at the National Science Bowl. Each member of the winning team will be awarded the $1000 Hitachi Scholarship and a special Science Bowl version of their high school's letterman jacket.

Boeing Company is generously providing funds for a new award of $1000 in U.S Savings Bonds for each member of the second place team in the buzzer competition. Boeing has been a charter sponsor of the DWP Science Bowl since the first year of the event in 1993.

Second, third and fourth place finishing teams will receive the opportunity to participate in field trips to explore the Eastern Sierra-Owens Valley region of California, the main source of the city's water supply. And the members of the top four teams will have opportunities for paid summer internships at DWP. Additional prizes include awards to schools and students for the purchase of science and technology supplies.

Science Bowl follows a game show style format similar to the GE College Bowl television program. Two teams of four students answer "toss-up" questions presented by a moderator. A team member providing the quickest correct answer earns four points and the exclusive right for the respective team to answer a bonus question worth 10 points.

Subjects cover such varied fields as physics, chemistry, earth and space science, biology, astronomy, calculus, trigonometry, computer programming and current events in science.

The purpose of the program is to encourage students of all backgrounds to pursue studies and careers in technical fields. The program also seeks to showcase the talents of scholars to serve as role models for other students throughout the city.

The year 2001 marks the ninth DWP Science Bowl. DWP is the only utility in the nation that serves as a coordinating regional sponsor. Participating schools represent the Los Angeles Unified School District and private/parochial schools throughout the city of Los Angeles. Approximately eight regional competitions are held in California.

Sponsors of the DWP Science Bowl include Reliant Energy Services Inc., Hitachi, The Boeing Company, The Gas Company and the Water and Power Federal Credit Union.
