High School Students From Around United States To Gather In Washington D.C. For 14th Annual National Peace Essay Contest More than 3,000 students from across the United States, including Puerto Rico and American high school students studying overseas, participated in this year's contest, writing an essay (under 1,500 words) that assessed how third parties can help bring peace to violent civil conflicts abroad. Each state-level winner for 2001 has been invited to represent this or her home state in an all-expenses-paid program in Washington, D.C., June 23-28. During the week, students will meet with senior U.S. government officials, members of Congress, foreign embassy officials, and other foreign policy experts. They will also engage in a three-day simulation focusing on the impact of third parties in the current civil war in Sri Lanka. The students, each of whom garnered a $1,000 scholarship, will be honored at a special awards banquet. Winners of the national first, second, and third-place scholarships of $10,000, $5,000, and $2,500 will be announced at the dinner. The U.S. Institute of Peace is an independent organization created and funded by Congress to promote research, education, and training on the resolution of international conflicts. The National Peace Essay Contest is one of the Institute's oldest continuing activities, designed to promote civic education on issues of international peace and conflict resolution.
