Kaplan and Newsweek Announce 8th Annual 'My Turn' Essay Competition

Students Can Earn Money For College

NEW YORK, Sept. 24 , 2001/PRNewswire/ -- Kaplan, Inc. and Newsweek announce the eighth annual "My Turn" Essay Competition, which gives high school students the opportunity to showcase their writing ability and compete for academic scholarships. The "My Turn" Essay Competition is a collaboration that builds on Newsweek's "My Turn" column and Kaplan's educational programs. Kaplan and Newsweek created the competition to help students meet the rising costs of college and to offer a forum for expressing their point of view.

Ten finalists will be selected, with the first place winner receiving $5,000, the second place winner receiving $2,000 and eight additional winners receiving $1,000. Ten honorable mentions will also be selected. In addition to the scholarship, a winning essay may be published in Newsweek magazine.

Entry forms and official rules are available online at http://www.kaptest.com/essay or by calling 1-800-KAP-TEST. The deadline for entry is March 1, 2002. Winners will be announced in April.

Students express opinions reflecting personal experiences that have shaped their lives in original 500-1,000-word essays. Past topics have included school prayer, the effects of war on families, the value of friendship and diversity.

A panel of judges will be announced in January. Last year judges included author and Newsweek columnist Anna Quindlen, WNBC anchor Lynda Baquero, Newsweek senior editorial assistant Pamela Hamer, Columbia University senior associate director of admissions Peter Johnson, and professor of public health and sociology at Johns Hopkins, Thomas LaVeist.
