NATION'S
TOP STUDENTS, TEACHERS AND HIGH SCHOOLS RECEIVE SIEMENS AWARDS
FOR ADVANCED PLACEMENT
NEW YORK, October 16, 2001 -- The Siemens Foundation has announced
the names of the students, teachers and schools who are the winners
of the prestigious Siemens Awards for Advanced Placement, for
outstanding performance in Advanced Placement® (AP) courses.
The selections for the AP awards are made by The College Board,
which administers the program.
Now in its fourth year, The Siemens Awards for Advanced Placement
are given to 24 students from six regions around the country
who scored the highest cumulative scores on exams in eight AP®
courses. These include Biology; Calculus BC; Chemistry; Computer
Science AB; Environmental Science; Physics C Electricity and
Magnetism; Physics C Mechanics; and Statistics. Each of the regional
winners (two males and two females) receives a $3,000 scholarship.
The Siemens Foundation is dedicated to providing scholarships
and increasing access to higher education for gifted students
in science, mathematics and technology-related disciplines.
When the Third International Mathematics and Science Study
(TIMSS) showed that science and mathematics education levels
for U.S. high school students did not compare favorably with
those of other nations, one group stood out as a shining exception
- students who had taken The College Board's AP ® calculus
and physics courses. These students are consistently competitive
with the best mathematics and science students in the world.
Special recognition also goes to 18 teachers who have made
significant contributions to AP study and 12 high schools for
showing the greatest improvement in the number of students taking
AP examinations. Each high school teacher receives a $1,000 award.
The winning high schools also each receive a $1,000 award.
