DEADLINE (extended): Dec. 31,
2001 (postmarked)
THEME: Fresh and finely crafted
writings that illumine the search
for spirit, and/or express the experience of soul-making.
ABOUT SOUL-MAKING: It can occur
in any moment, from the
smallest, most ordinary -- such as scrubbing a floor or pedaling
a
bicycle -- to the most tragic or miraculous. Soul-making implies
a
life journey, so spirit -- or the search for it -- is present
not only in
moments of hope, faith, joy, revelation, and redemption, but
also
in moments of confusion, fear, anger, sorrow, and despair. And
at
least as often in the quietest, least dramatic moments. So soul-making
is not only about angels, fairies, rituals, or magic, not only
about
battles between good and evil, but also about careful attention
paid
in the moment -- there may be as much spirit in giving someone
a
haircut as in slaying a dragon, in tying a shoelace as in falling
in love.
Whatever our beliefs may be about the divine, when it comes to
creative writing, the saying is apt that "God is in the
details" -- the
great mystic poet William Blake wrote of "see[ing] a world
in a grain
of sand." To help your spirit come through more clearly
in your
writing, look, listen, use all your senses, observe closely,
be specific.
Let your writing surprise you. And never doubt that your own
life is
as worthy of a poem or a story as the lives of saints and heroes.
