EDITORIAL GUIDELINES

For parent-teen.com

DECEMBER 1, 2005

We are not buying any material at present. The guidelines below will apply when we resume accepting submissions.

The first section of these guidelines addresses material submitted by professional free-lance writers. (Incidentally, we don't judge professionalism by the age of the writer. We have bought articles from writers as young as 12 and as old as 92.)

Toward the bottom of the page you'll find some information about a feature where we invite readers to contribute information without payment.

At present, parent-teen.com buys mainly material which can be used both on this website and in the teen section of our print magazine, Parent' Press, which is distributed free in the San Francisco Bay Area (75,000 circulation).

We normally purchase all rights, including electronic.

Payment has ranged from $35 to $500, depending on the complexity of the material, quality of writing, amount of research, and length. Payment is normally made within 30 days of publication in the print edition.

We rarely purchase first rights only - there would have to be some substantial reason to persuade us. If we do buy first rights only, payment will be substantially lower than our rates for all rights.

We look at second rights material only if it is accompanied by a list of publications where it has appeared previously and where it is currently under consideration. Payment for simultaneous submissions or reprints is generally in the $25 range.

HOW TO SUBMIT

We prefer to look at complete manuscripts rather than queries if we have not published your work before. Please state whether photographs are available. We require a signed model release from each person who is identifiable in a photo (must be signed by a parent or guardian if the person is under 18).

By mail: Each manuscript must be accompanied by a stamped, self-addressed envelope for return or reply. Provide clean clear copy that can be scanned if necessary. Address to Editorial Department, Parent.TEEN, 1454 Sixth St., Berkeley, CA 94710.

By email: In the body of email only, no attachments. Your complete name, street address, and daytime or message phone number should be included. Email to ParentsPrs@aol.com.

No queries or submissions by phone or fax, please.

WHAT WE LIKE

We prefer a "magazine-y" approach, with anecdotes, quotes, expert and popular opinion, good research. Write as tightly as possible while covering the topic appropriately - we don't pay by the word!

We are open to a wide range of subject matter, as long as it's relevant to our audience of families with teenagers and preteens. Articles may be addressed primarily to parents, to teens, or both.

We are not interested in "lectures" about how to raise teens or in humor at the expense of either generation.

PUBLISHED BUT NOT PAID FOR

Right now we'd like items for the "From the Backpack" feature. These can include - but are not limited to - favorite quotations, anecdotes, historical and multicultural material relating to teens and parenting of teens, and your favorite stress-busters (G-rated only, please!). Submit by mail or email as outlined above.

Please include, at a minimum, your first name or nickname, age (if a teen) or relationship (if an adult, e.g., mother of 13-year-old, high school biology teacher), city and state or country of residence, and - a must - the source of your submission. (That might be a book, another website, personal experience . . . )
